Making your own business life more manageable

July 2013 | Servcorp

. . . .

We all know that it's tough at the top. In fact, there's often so much going on that things can seem a little, well, unmanageable.

The good news is that you don't really need to feel overwhelmed. In reality, you can take control of your business life by implementing some tried and tested techniques that'll add a bit of structure to your life.

Organisation is key, and that means you need to have a note of all your appointments and deadlines. If you can afford an assistant or secretary to take care of these things, then that's great, but for many in charge of small to medium sized organisations this would be an unnecessary expense.

If you're in this position while also struggling to deal with the fact that you're not the most organised, then the good news is that there's software that can take care of the hard part for you.

For instance, even basic email software should be able to handle your appointments. All you'll have to do is add in the times of your appointments and general deadlines as they're being agreed to, and it'll clearly illustrate if you can feasibly manage them, or if they're overlapping with other responsibilities.

Specialist, yet basic, software can also take care of the likes of employee attendance and holidays. If you've got a large workforce it's pretty easy to be a little slack with regards to giving out holidays or really keeping an eye on who's going to be in the office at certain times.

By picking up the likes of this software, you'll be able to gain a clear picture of whether allowing holidays during certain periods will allow all work to be completed. It'll also allow you to keep an eye on the likes of employee absence, hopefully illustrating any alarming patterns before they become too much of a problem.

There's even technology that'll be able to keep an eye on the workload of your employees – indicating where there's space to delegate extra responsibilities, and where people are already running above capacity and need a break.

Technology certainly can't take care of all your responsibilities, but it can help you to be a lot more organised. By combining it with traditional savvy – you know, how to properly prepare for meetings, get through your work and give the right responsibilities to the right people – you'll be on to a winner.

All too often those in a position of responsibility put their inability to be properly organised down to their mind set. However, the truth is that anyone can be organised, and being organised can certainly make your business life more manageable.

Is that not what it's all supposed to be about when you're running a business?
