Quick and Easy Ways to Find Office Space in Malaysia

August 03, 2015 | Sharon Cheong

Malaysia is a great place to set up a new business. Though the import export business has always been strong, these days corporations are looking for an offshore headquarters and Malaysia is an excellent choice. The nation has a business-friendly government, low cost labor, plenty of commercial space and good access to the best seaports in the world.

New business owners don't always have the money to lease and furnish attractive front offices for their business. In most cases, people are looking for a really good deal on office space. A place that is fully furnished can be a big plus and save thousands of dollars. Though Malaysia is a first-class financial hub, it can be pricey to lease commercial and office space here. Newcomers are sometimes baffled by the culture, language, and local customs and they may find searching for the right office space a difficult task, so the most popular ways to find office space in Malaysia are listed below.

Coworking Space

This is a fairly new concept where one large office space is shared by many people from different walks of life. This idea began with mostly independent contractors and work-from-home people who couldn't afford a standard office space for their business. These days, others have joined in and now all types of working professionals use coworking spaces. For instance, if your work causes you to travel quite a bit and you never know when you'll need a nice office space to do some work, the coworking space concept would be a perfect fit for your needs.

Day Offices

This type of office space is usually found in a large office building. These spaces can be rented by the hour or by the day. You will have a bit more privacy and often some amenities are included in the cost. For instance, most companies that provide day offices also include refreshments, free internet and access to printers and fax machines. This is basically a step up from the coworking space. Some providers also offer professional admin support and other features for an additional charge.

Local Listings & Ads

Every city, including Kuala Lumpur has local classified ads, as well as local magazines and trade publications that contain ads for office space. Be sure to check the references to see whether the landlord is reputable. Get your leasing agreement in writing so that no confusion will arise about the size, location or furnishings included.

Commercial Real Estate Agents

Malaysian real estate agents normally have office space listings within their database. These could range from small buildings in distant neighborhoods to spaces in downtown high-rise buildings. Be specific about what you need insofar as the size, features and location.  Naturally, leasing in a skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur will be much more expensive than renting a small space in an unpopular area of the city.
